The Next Reader May Be an Agent

Some publishers are now writing for a reader who will never open the page. In a piece for WIRED, Kate Taylor reported that outlets are starting to produce content whose intended audience is an AI agent. The human still gets a briefing, but the file underneath is built so a machine can lift it, trim it, and hand it back in the exact form the user asked for.

Axios is the clearest case. At the Digiday Publishing Summit in September, they announced Axios Direct—feeds meant for agents rather than for a homepage. Chief revenue officer Jacquelyn Cameron told WIRED the company wants to be where the audience is, noting that a significant share of news consumption is moving into AI systems. The first feed, launched this fall, gives the agents of Axios Pro Deals subscribers access to merger and acquisition (M&A) reporting. A second feed, planned for next year, will train in-house models. A third, also planned for next year, will send reporting directly to an individual subscriber’s own agent.

Cameron described the format as closer to a Bloomberg terminal than an article: structured lines of text, more like RSS than a story laid out for a person. Chief operating officer Allison Murphy put the crawler’s preference bluntly: time is money, and a model does not want to travel three-quarters of the way down a page to find the main point. Axios’s short, structured style already makes it easy to lift.

Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, of the University of Copenhagen, mentioned that the market for publishing to agents is emerging, immature, and extremely uneven. A mention inside an answer can still be useful, the way a TikTok clip can carry a brand without sending anyone back to the site. But it is not the same thing as being read.

As AI agents increasingly step between content creators and their readers, finding the right balance between machine readability and human connection is essential. At Black Sheep Meedia, we help newsrooms and creators leverage cutting-edge AI while keeping humans firmly in the loop.
